Spiritualized Ladies and Gentleman We Are Floating In Space
For variety during the work week, sometimes we'll play this one before
we play OK Computer rather than after we play it (that is,
of course, when we're not listening to Liz on WDET). But either way,
they've increasingly become our back-to-back listening choices.
While we didn't know it at the time, this was the soundtrack that was
playing when we got our first dose of laughing gas at the dentist office
back in the 4th grade. The all-engulfing dentist chair was
reclined to horizontal, the regulator was slipped over our nose and
the world went dark as we shut my eyes. To the ever-present droning
rhythm of the rise and fall of our breathing, our reclining body slowly
rose in the warm dark surroundings, then, while suspended in mid-air,
started to rotate like the second hand on a clock. Mind you, we felt
the annoyance of the dentist's drill hitting a nerve - and there are
some spots on this CD that take off in what can only be described as
noise - but the laughing gas melted away the notion of it being a bad
experience to it just simply being a part of the overall experience.
An experience well worth repeating.
