We seem to be going against the grain on recommending this one. Details
or some other rag gave it a 2 out of 10, Dave looked at us funny when
we were singing its virtues at the Tap Room recently, and Chatty Kathy
called it "slit your wrist" music on a recent roadtrip through
Germany (oblivious to the fact that riding 6 hours in a car with Chatty
Kathy may just be "slit your wrist" qualification).
The first thing you have to do is ignore/program out/delete tracks
#2 "Bugman" and #4 "Swap Song". If you've been following Blur at all,
you know that each of their discs contain a couple of 2 minute songs
that rock out. "Song 2" from their last disc "Blur"
being perhaps the most popular of these. We think these songs are crap
and a distraction from the rest of the disc. In the case of 13, the
rest of the disc is a very moody, at times dark, mix of atmosphere,
experimental sounds, and melody that's best enjoyed alone at night with
a couple of beers and candles lit. The story goes that Damon Albarn
wrote this right after breaking up with his squeeze. Sounds like
it! Half way through this disc, it takes a moody sonic departure bombarding
you with layers of swirlingsounds.
