If you're looking for guitars, bass, and drums while angst-ridden,
overpaid male singer growls through another alternarock tune, this disc
not for you. This is two white dudes in their best club duds breaking
out the electronica, mixing decks, sample library and computers and
whipping up some energetic, driving tunes that will keep the dance floor
packed. In between, they sprinkle some funky-ass soul grooves,
guest appearances by De La Soul, Jungle Brothers and 60's lounge queen
Shirley Bassey and a whole James Bond-like spy theme soundtrack.
In early Feb we hit the HQ Club in London's Camden Town for the fortnightly
(only a unit of measure the brits would know) Lava Lounge gig.
After a couple of bands had warmed up the crowd, the DJ came on at about
12:30 and started spinning a fantastic set of old groove and disco.
Right after he transitions the crowd to some early 90's stuff (e.g.,
Soup Dragon), he whips out History Repeating from Decksanddrumsandrockandroll and the place goes into a frenzy. The song is a classic in the
making.
While not as catchy as History Repeating, the rest of the disc is also
very solid. But, it's probably not something you're going to be ready
to play for a slow, quite, relaxing evening at home - as we believe
our poor upstairs neighbor reminds us of when he violently knocks on
his floor/our ceiling for us to turn down the volume.
