We're cruising around SF
late one night looking for a place to live when on KALX, Cal's outstanding
student run radio, on comes the funkiest, groovinist, sitar driven tune
We've
ever heard. We make a mental note to try to find the tune but quickly
forget once we get back to the house hunting chore. Imagine our
surprise when a couple of weeks later Jeffrey, one of the product
designers here at work, plops down a curious looking CD on our desk that
turns out to be that long lost tune.
This disc is an EP length CD
of mixes of the same basic theme - Mathar (guess it means mother in
Hindi). The first track, the Radio
Edit, lays down the basic Mathar beat with some funky sitar. It's
high energy, reverbed out sitar grooving on top of deep bass and tons of
layered bongos and other various percussion pieces. The other tracks work
off the same vibe, but mix it up - they are not strictly the same thing
over and over. The Richard Fearless Remix throws a totally different
bass line in there so convincingly that you're effectively in a different
tune and never relate back to the Mathar theme other than being reminded
by a hint of sitar. Other mixes keep more of the theme but vary it
up by altering the mood or surrounding the theme up with other textures.
Apparently, this tune has
been going around forever, being horded by the pychedelics since it's
creation back in '69 and then rejuvenated by a number of different people
for 90's dance floor mixes. An essential on the turntable for your
next rave or a pick-me-up after your next dinner party!
