Gorillaz
Gorillaz Although it's been out for a while now, we've been avoiding this one like a vacation in Detroit. When it comes to finding new music, there are a few rules of thumb that seem to work pretty well. If you've heard it first on your local alterna-rock station, we hate to break the news but you didn't just discover the latest and greatest. Some wanks in the marketing department of one of the big five recording labels made a successful placement. Oh, don't tell me you really thought Limp Bizkit made it because of their talent. Oh you did, how cute. Second, if your music clueless buddy - you know the one, the guy who hasn't bought a CD since college. The one who still thinks he's hip because he discovered Black Flag way back when. The guy who you thought liked music, but probably only showed an interest in it back in college because that's what you did back then. It's this same type of guy who, when asked what's the latest band he's digging on is quick to point to The Dave Matthews Band. In fact, it's perfectly clear. A person either likes music or they don't! People who like The Dave Matthews Band epitomize that later category. But I digress, where were we? Oh yeah, if this guy gives YOU a music recommendation raise another red flag. And that's just what happed to us. Double whammy! To make it worse, said musically challenged dude decided to lecture us on the finer points of Gorillaz's "Clint Eastwood" WHILE IT PLAYED ON THE ALTERNA-ROCK STATION. Two red flags went way up and we wrote this one off early. Alas, we have to admit that a new release that features Damon Albarn (from Blur - but you knew that) does indeed peak our interest. After all, it wasn't just any band that got two discs in our list of Best CDs of the 90s. So after the clamor died down, we finally broke down and got our hands on Gorillaz. More drums and bass than Blur, and not as bleak and strung out as their last disc, 13, but Albarn has definitely pissed in the corners of this release. If you're a Blur fan, this is going to sit well with you. File it directly to the right of 13 in your CD collection.
